AASA holds elections annually for president-elect and the executive committee.

AASA President-Elect
Eligibility

To be eligible to run for AASA President-Elect, a member must have been:

  • an eligible AASA voting member for at least three (3) immediately preceding years;
  • a member in good standing of a chartered affiliate for at least the three (3) immediately preceding years and a current member of the Governing Board and/or Executive Committee; or
  • a former member of either the Governing Board or the Executive Committee, having served during at least one of the three (3) immediately preceding years.
Candidate Filing

Candidates must submit a completed Candidate Filing Packet and the $500 filing fee no later than 5:00 pm ET on Friday, December 1, 2023.

AASA Executive Committee
Eligibility

To be eligible an eligible candidate for the Executive Committee, a member must have been:

  • an eligible AASA voting member for at least three (3) immediately preceding years;
  • a member in good standing of a chartered affiliate for at least the three (3) immediately preceding years and a current member of the Governing Board; or
  • a former member having served during at least one of the three (3) immediately preceding years, from a chartered affiliate within the region.
Nominations

Regionally-elected AASA Governing Board members nominate and elect AASA Executive Committee members.

Nominations for vacancies are due each winter in accordance with the deadline set by the Election Committee.

Frequently Asked Questions
How can someone become a candidate for President?

Prospective candidates must first present their state superintendent association with a written notification of intention.

Next, a notification of intention must be presented to AASA.

They must submit a completed candidate filing packet by 5pm ET on Friday Dec. 1, 2023 (including the filing fee).

What information is required from a prospective candidate?

Along with name, dates as a member in good standing with AASA, years served on the AASA Executive Committee and/or the AASA Governing Board, the following information is required from each candidate and will comprise the Candidate Filing Packet:

  • Current position, including title, school district or other organization, city, and state with starting date
  • Most recent previous position, including title, school district or other organization, city, and state with starting and ending dates
  • Post-secondary education (Bachelor’s, Master’s, Advanced Certificate, Doctorate). Please include names of institutions, city, and state, and the year(s) in which the degree(s) was received. Please provide this in reverse order with the most recent degree listed first.
  • AASA activities and other activities. Please provide this in reverse order with the most recent activities listed first. (Limit to 10 items total. May include volunteer leadership, affiliations, conference presentations)
  • Respond to the following two questions (submitted as part of the filing documentation):
    • Why are you seeking election as AASA’s president-elect? (100 words or fewer)
    • If nominated and elected, what will be your #1 priority? (50 words or fewer)
  • Each candidate will write and submit a 600 – 650-word essay on a topic of their own choosing as if it were to be used as a monthly “AASA President’s Column” found in School Administrator magazine.
  • Candidates are to submit a digital color photograph to be included with materials distributed to AASA Governing Board members. Candidates should select photographs carefully, looking for clarity, sharpness and technical quality. Nominated AASA president-elect candidates will have their pictures printed on the biographical materials included with the ballots and on the AASA website.
Is there a fee associated with the candidacy?

Along with the Candidate Filing Packet, a $500 filing fee must be submitted.

All or part of the $500 candidate’s filing fee may be paid by the candidates’ home state association, as long as it is received by the filing deadline. The filing fee may be sent by check to AASA headquarters (1615 Duke Street, Alexandria, VA 22314) OR by electronic payment by phone at (703) 528-0700.

When are candidates introduced?

The candidates for president-elect will be introduced at the Opening General Session at the National Conference on Education and asked to stand from designated seats on the floor.

No remarks will be made by the candidates at this time. Time will be allocated at this or another General Session for the candidates to present remarks on a topic of their choice for up to a total of five minutes.

When are candidates allowed to campaign?
Campaigning may begin the day after the Governing Board certification and ends on the last day of the voting period or as set by the Executive Committee and is bound to all campaign conduct standards and prohibitions as outlined in this document.
Can a candidate campaign at the AASA National Conference on Education?

Face-to-face campaigning will be done only at the National Conference on Education.

Each credentialed candidate nominated by the Governing Board will be provided with the opportunity to present remarks on a topic of their choice at a General Session of the National Conference on Education.

These remarks are limited to a total time of no more than five minutes by each candidate.

All campaigning at AASA meetings other than the National Conference on Education is strictly forbidden.

When are ballots distributed?

Ballots will be distributed electronically to AASA members during the National Conference on Education and voting will conclude 3 weeks after the distribution of ballots.

Included with the ballot will be summary information about the candidates (biographical information submitted by each candidate in accordance with these guidelines).

AASA voting members in good standing will be notified when the ballots have been distributed. This notification may be in the form of a notice on the AASA website or via e-mail.

When are the elections?

Voting will be totally online/electronic and will kick off on February 16, 2024.

Voting will close on March 8, 2024.

All AASA members in voting-eligible categories will receive at least three email notifications/reminders to vote.
