Charles Melvin, superintendent of the 1,240-student district in Beloit, Wis., took a renewed interest in the martial arts when his 8-year-old son took up Tae Kwon Do. Training three hours a week, Melvin at age 51 took second in the sport’s 2001 national championships in the 33-and-older category. At one point, he broke two bones in his left hand while blocking an opponent’s kick. He won that match but ended up with surgically inserted pins. Once the cast came off, he reinjured the same hand in his first competition. Fortunately he’s right-handed.
