A veteran music educator, Achelpohl worked as director of music in the Carbondale, Ill., Community High School District 165 and served as high school principal for four years in each of two Illinois school districts, Niantic Harristown Community Unit School District 6 and Fieldcrest Community Unit School District 6.

Michael J. Lovett
The new superintendent of the White Bear Lake, Minn., Area Schools is Michael Lovett, who previously served as the assistant superintendent in the Minnetonka, Minn., Public Schools. Lovett also has directed personnel and planning in the Intermediate School District 917 in Rosemount, Minn., and directed the education statistics section of the Minnesota Department of Education. An adjunct instructor in the licensure program for school administrators at University of Minnesota, Lovett earned a Ph.D. in educational administration from the same university.

Gary W. Norris
A 36-year educator, Gary Norris has assumed the superintendency of the 10,800-student Waterloo, Iowa, system after having filled the top post in Sarasota County, Fla., for the last four years. Norris has worked the past 26 years as superintendent in four school districts, including Indian River County in Vero Beach, Fla., and the Salina Public Schools in Salina, Kan. He also served as president of School For Fair Funding, a Kansas advocacy group. Norris earned a Ph.D. in educational administration from Kansas State University.

William C. Shuttleworth

William Shuttleworth has assumed the superintendency of the first new consolidated school district in Maine in more than 40 years. He serves simultaneously as superintendent of School Union 47 for the towns of Arrowsic, Phippsburg, West Bath and Woolwich and as superintendent of Bath. The new district, Regional School Unit 1, combines all towns under one board. Before coming to the mid-coast of Maine four years ago, he served as superintendent in Maine School Administrative District 39 for five years. Shuttleworth spent 17 years as the principal of the West School in Portland, Maine, an alternative K-12 school.

SIDELIGHT

Ronald Chiste has been retired from the superintendency in Spotswood, N.J., for about eight years, but he’s filled some of his time with another pursuit that suits his fighting spirit: karate. He’s become a black belt and now serves as a karate school instructor near Easton, Md., where he lives. He teaches a popular self-defense course for women at the local YMCA. For Chiste, who still holds AASA membership, the avocation fits him suitably. “I’ve always been a supporter of the underdog. It bothers me when people are bullied or victimized — children, women,” he says. “Started out as a teacher. I’m still doing it.”
