Have you ever heard someone say "That person has an attitude?"

John C. Maxwell's book, Attitude 101: What Every Leader Needs to Know, is a quick, easy-to-read work designed to give you the essentials of attitude. The impact of attitudes on individuals and on leadership, the formation of attitudes and how the right attitude affects others are described with examples from the author's life and the lives of well-known individuals.

One of Maxwell's axioms is "Our attitude can turn our problems into blessings." He quotes Sidlow Baxter, author of Awake, My Heart, who wrote, "What is the difference between an obstacle and an opportunity? Our attitude toward it. Every opportunity has a difficulty and every difficulty has an opportunity."

What experiences shape our attitudes and how we can change attitudes are presented so that individuals can assess where they are in a given situation.

The author emphasizes that leadership is a journey and what influences our attitudes as we take this journey is lessons learned from adversity. He states, "Success is knowing your purpose in life, growing to reach your maximum potential and sowing seeds that benefit others."

Maxwell, a lecturer on leadership and founder of the INJOY Group, definitely provides school leaders with food for thought in Attitude 101.
