BOARD-SAVVY SUPERINTENDENT

Change is regularly in the air for many superintendents. Opportunities open up in school system leadership and elsewhere that are great moves up, great moves out and, for some, a great discovery that their future is now uncertain. The superintendent search process is in constant swing.

Undoubtedly, you have seen multiple articles, social media posts and blogs about the shortage of qualified superintendents and the abundance of retirements or departures from the profession. Securing a superintendency should be easier. After all, you are needed!

Yet the search process for a superintendency is complex — made even more so for sitting superintendents who place the relationship with their current board of education at risk. Boards are anxious to get it right. The public and district staff are anxious to know what their future holds as a new superintendent takes the reins. How qualified is the candidate? Will he or she be a fit for our community? What talents will the applicant bring that will benefit our students?
