We all know the skills people expect superintendents to have. Strategic planning. Instructional leadership. Communication. Finance. Politics.

Plus the ability to smile politely while someone explains how they would run the school district if they had five minutes and a whiteboard.

All of that matters. But one skill may matter more than we admit. It often determines whether a superintendent survives on the job and thrives in the role. It is also the one we talk about the least: mental fortitude.
