The Promise of Hope: Cultivating Belonging and Excellence in Our Public Schools

September 10, 2026

The Promise-Keeper blog series is part of AASA's 2026 "The Promise of Hope" back-to-school campaign, spotlighting AASA members who bring hope to life in their districts every day through courageous decisions, transparent leadership, and student-centered action.

As the Superintendent of Ypsilanti Community Schools in Ypsilanti, Michigan, the start of a new school year always brings a powerful wave of anticipation, reflection, and purpose. It is a time of renewal for educational communities across the nation. This year, as we join together for AASA’s back-to-school campaign, we do so under a theme that could not be more fitting or necessary: "The Promise of Hope". This theme is more than a slogan; it is a celebration of the profound, transformative hope that lives within America’s public schools.

Let's Begin With Our Current Reality!
Public schools are not merely buildings; they are the cornerstone of our communities and the foundation of both our current reality and our nation's future.

As district leaders, we must be honest about the terrain we navigate. When we look around our offices and walk our hallways, the challenges can feel daunting. We are deeply concerned about hiring and retaining high-quality staff, stabilizing and growing scholar enrollment, and ensuring that our physical and digital learning environments are prepared and welcoming. These are not minor operational details—they are the heavy, complex realities of current-day educational leadership.

Yet, in the face of these challenges, we must also remember the beautiful, indispensable promise of what we offer. Public schools are not merely buildings; they are the cornerstone of our communities and the foundation of both our current reality and our nation's future.

Within our classrooms, we have an up-close and personal view of the growth, development, and innovation that makes America the greatest place to live on Earth. We provide an invaluable service to our country, nurturing the minds that will shape tomorrow.

The Heart of Our Promise: Our People and Culture

To deliver on this promise, we must begin with the people who make our schools run. We cannot cultivate hope in our scholars if we do not first cultivate it in our staff. Competitive salaries and benefits are crucial, but we all know that culture matters just as much. People stay where they feel connected, appreciated, and where they know the people around them want them to succeed.

As Sue A. McCarty, a Director of Human Resources, beautifully notes, “our goal is to take belonging to the next level, creating an environment where every employee feels valued, heard, and respected in tangible, meaningful, and even fun ways every day. Every educator, bus driver, support staff member, and administrator should walk into work knowing:

  • I matter here."
  • "My work matters."
  • My voice matters."
  • I am appreciated."
  • "I am part of something bigger than myself."

When our staff experiences this depth of connection, they pass that energy directly to our scholars.

When our staff is supported, our scholars thrive. Belonging is not a soft concept; it is the absolute prerequisite for academic success.
The Foundation of Achievement: Our Scholars

When our staff is supported, our scholars thrive. Belonging is not a soft concept; it is the absolute prerequisite for academic success.

Nina Harris, Associate Principal at Ypsilanti Community Middle School in Michigan, captures this synergy perfectly: “This year, I hope our school community continues to prove that belonging is the foundation of achievement, belief fuels possibility, and together we can help every scholar become unstoppable.”

When we, as a collective community of scholars, staff, families, and neighbors, move forward with a shared vision and an unwavering commitment to excellence, we create opportunities that change lives far beyond the classroom doors.

Making This Year the Best Year Yet

How do we translate this promise of hope into daily practice? How do we ensure that this school year is our most successful and impactful yet? It requires active, courageous leadership. As Kevin Polston, Superintendent of Kentwood Public Schools in Michigan, reminds us, President Barack Obama famously stated, “Change will not come if we wait for some other person, or if we wait for some other time. We are the ones we've been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.”

To lead that change and make this school year the best one yet, let us commit to these core pillars:

  • Elevate Belonging as Our Foundation: Build a culture where every scholar and staff member feels a deep, authentic connection to their school. Belonging is the spark that ignites achievement.
  • Fuel Possibility Through Belief: Approach every challenge and every scholar with the unwavering belief that success is possible. When we believe in our scholars, we help them become unstoppable.
  • Show Tangible Appreciation Daily: Don't just say the words—make appreciation an active, visible part of your daily routine. Ensure your team knows they matter, their voices are heard, and their work is invaluable.
  • Unify Around a Shared Vision: Bring families, staff, and the community together around a common goal and a shared commitment to excellence. Collective effort is what multiplies our impact.
  • Be the Change We Seek: Do not wait for conditions to be perfect or for others to solve our problems. Embrace our role as the innovators and leaders our districts need right now.
Let us remember that we are shaping the future of this country, one scholar, one classroom, and one community at a time.

My fellow leaders and educators, the work we do is challenging, but the calling is truly noble. As we open our doors this fall, let us carry the banner of hope proudly. Let us remember that we are shaping the future of this country, one scholar, one classroom, and one community at a time.

Here's to a year of unstoppable growth, deep connection, and outstanding achievement.
