Oregon Superintendent Gustavo Balderas Named AASA President-elect

Alexandria, Va. – (July 12, 2023) – Gustavo Balderas, superintendent of Beaverton School District, in Beaverton, Ore., was sworn in today as the 2023-24 president-elect of AASA, The School Superintendents Association.  

Balderas has served as superintendent in Beaverton since 2022, after serving as school district leader in Edmonds, Wash., Eugene Ore., and two California districts. He first joined AASA in 2011.

“As a proud product of American public schools, education is the backbone of our democracy,” said Balderas. “Leadership sustainability among my superintendent peers throughout the country will be a top priority as president-elect for AASA, an organization which I am so proud to be a part of.”

Balderas is a current member of the AASA executive committee and is the president of the Association of Latino Administrators and Superintendents. He was named AASA National Superintendent of the Year® and Oregon Superintendent of the Year in 2020.

“Superintendent Balderas’ contributions to public education are nothing short of immeasurable and represent what is best for leading advanced instructional practices at Beaverton Schools,” said David R. Schuler, executive director, AASA. “He has steadfastly promoted academic achievement and has demonstrated integrity wherever he has been throughout his career. It will be an honor for me to work side-by-side with Gustavo in his new role as president-elect.”

Balderas’ post-secondary degrees include D.Ed., University of Oregon, Eugene, Ore.; M.S., Portland State University, Portland, Ore.; B.A., Western Oregon State College, Monmouth, Ore.

Gladys Cruz, district superintendent of Questar III BOCES in Castleton, N.Y., was also sworn in today as the 2023-24 president of AASA. The installation ceremony was held in conjunction with AASA’s Legislative Advocacy Conference in Washington, D.C.
