The mean age of superintendents appears to be dropping. In a 2023-24 national survey conducted by AASA, the average superintendent age was 50, two years younger than what the association’s 2022-23 study indicated. The median age for both years was 52.

In the newest survey, 35.1 percent of superintendents were 41-50 years of age compared to 29.8 percent in 2012.

The percentage of superintendents 60 and older decreased from 19.5 percent in 2012 to just 9.6 percent in 2023-24.

More than 2,700 superintendents participated in the latest survey.
