BOARD-SAVVY SUPERINTENDENT

Superintendents carry a role in developing the effectiveness and efficiency of their boards of education even before local elections take place.

Board members’ efficacy ought not be ignored if we expect them to govern public schools in service to taxpayers and patrons of local communities. By law, they are expected to be proficient at hiring and evaluating district CEOs, overseeing the operating budget and education program, setting the strategic direction and adopting policies to guide the organization.

Those are lofty responsibilities that not every contender for public office understands.
