Providing Goal Updates that Board Members Want

BOARD-SAVVY SUPERINTENDENT
Working with a Dallas-area school board-administrative team, I asked a board member, “How is your district doing on the student learning goals you developed last summer?”
He replied, “I have absolutely no idea.”
At lunch, an assistant superintendent quietly said, “I don’t know why he said what he did. I just updated the board on our student-learning goal progress at their meeting last week.”
I paused and gently asked, “Have you ever considered using basic teaching techniques and checking for understanding with the board?”
