River Trails School District, like many other districts across the country, needs infrastructure projects to improve its parking lots, roofs and HVAC systems. These costly projects are part of our long-range facilities plan and we save money for years in order to complete them. At the same time, the school board and administration believe demonstrating sustainability in our environment is essential.

The greatest barriers are spending more money up front for savings that will come much later. Outdated or misinformed beliefs also get in the way. When it comes to spending on infrastructure, communication is a key step in a successful sustainability initiative.
