My View

School leaders are navigating pressures related to staffing shortages, budget reductions, declining enrollment, governance tensions and political scrutiny. In this environment, one leadership stance matters more than ever: the ability to pair genuine care with unwavering accountability.

Being a caring leader and holding people accountable for high performance are not mutually exclusive. Together, they represent one of the highest forms of impactful leadership.

In common practice, however, care often is expressed as the avoidance of discomfort. Feedback is softened. Evaluation ratings are inflated. Expectations are lowered in the name of support.
