My View

In communities across the country, interscholastic sports have the power to bring people together, serve as a focal point of civic pride and give student-athletes opportunities to shine.

However, we are seeing too many examples of school sports contests marred by students and adults demonstrating hate through their words and actions — painful stories about alleged racism, homophobia, antisemitism and other forms of discrimination hurled at opposing players and teams.

When bias, bigotry and bullying appear on our playing venues, what should be the superintendent’s role? How can school district leaders prevent the ugly behavior and respond to these troubling acts?
