STATE OF THE SUPERINTENDENCY
The percentage of school districts’ annual budgets related to administration at the district and school levels has barely budged over the past 20 years.
Analysis of data published by the U.S. Department of Education’s National Center for Education Statistics shows 6.7 percent of school districts’ budgets related to administration in 2019-20, the most recent year available. Twenty years earlier, the percentage was 6.6 percent.
The federal government includes the following categories when calculating total administrative costs at both the district and site levels: salaries, employee benefits, purchased services and supplies.
