MY VIEW

Roy Hamblen retired from Mendham High School last June after 35 years of teaching and coaching. You probably don’t know him. But maybe you should. He’s part of a soon-to-be-lost generation of teachers and coaches who have materially changed lives.

How did they do it? Well, it wasn’t with creative pedagogy, although some have it. It wasn’t with new technology, although many use it. And it wasn’t with a fancy learning space. They didn’t need it.

What Hamblen did and others of his ilk do was really simple, well established and effective: They deeply cared for kids, they held high expectations, and they tolerated nothing less.
