This academy — a partnership with Howard University and USC Rossier — equips current and aspiring superintendents with the strategies to navigate urban education's distinct challenges while maintaining unwavering focus on equity and student success. Because urban students deserve leaders who understand their context and are prepared to deliver!

AASA offers two cohorts of the Urban Superintendents Academy in collaboration with two premier universities:

The AASA-Howard University Urban Superintendents Academy is recognized as one of the premier programs in the country. The academy aims to address disparities in educational leadership by cultivating a network of leaders ready to assume superintendent roles, especially in districts with large and diverse populations.

The AASA-USC Rossier Urban Superintendents Academy is a program designed to support current and aspiring superintendents as they navigate the complexities of equity-centered leadership in school districts. Participants gain the knowledge, insights, skills and practices needed to make a lasting meaningful impact as superintendent.
Just 10% of our nation’s superintendents are persons of color. This program is designed to change that.
By participating, you’ll gain:
- Expert Knowledge: Learn from the nation’s top thought leaders in urban education.
- 21st-Century Leadership Skills: Gain the strategies needed to navigate community relations, district politics, and equity-centered decision-making.
- Real-World Experience: Develop action plans to address the challenges faced by today’s urban superintendents.
- Mentorship and Networking: Join a supportive community of peers and mentors dedicated to advancing equity and excellence in education.
