Barbara Sargent
Superintendent, Hermon School Department (Maine)
Dr. Barbara Sargent is an award-winning, highly experienced educational leader who has served as a Superintendent of Schools in multiple school districts with a career spanning over three decades.
Currently the Superintendent of Schools for the Hermon School Department in Maine, she secured a $20 million budget approval through a town vote. Prior to this, she led the West Morris Regional High School District in New Jersey, managing a $63 million budget, securing a $75,000 grant for GenAI in education, and being named Morris County Superintendent of the Year 2024.
Their most significant tenure as Superintendent was with the Parsippany-Troy Hills School District (2017–2023), a large PreK-12 district with an annual budget of $175 million. During this time, Barbara led the successful re-opening of the district for in-person instruction during the COVID-19 pandemic and drove a successful Strategic Plan that introduced significant academic programs, including a STEM Pathways program, an elementary Strings program, and an accelerated math sequence. She also served as Superintendent in the Readington Township School District, implementing Full-Day Kindergarten and establishing an infrastructure for sustainability that earned Green Ribbon honors for two elementary schools.
Earlier in her career, Barbara held roles as Assistant Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction in the Madison School District, elevating the high school's state ranking, and as an Elementary School Principal in Montgomery Township School District, where she was named NJ Principal of the Year for Central NJ in 2003.
In addition to her administrative roles, Barbara served as an Adjunct Professor in graduate educational leadership programs at Ramapo College, Drew University, and Seton Hall University. She is a prolific writer and presenter, with published articles in prominent journals like School Administrator and Educational Leadership on topics ranging from preparing for controversy, to hiring principals, and women in leadership.
