AASA Updates School Safety and Crisis Planning Toolkit

Alexandria, Va. – October 7, 2021 – In a continuing effort to help guide and support school district leaders who are navigating the impact of the COVID pandemic, AASA, The School Superintendents Association, is pleased to launch a modified version of its School Safety and Crisis Planning Toolkit for proactive best practices before, during and after a crisis.
Created in 2018, the online portal was originally designed to provide guidance covering a variety of crises, including school shootings, hurricanes, tornadoes, floods, fires, suicides and other major incidents that arrive without a moment’s notice. Additions include features addressing the critical issues of mental health, cybersecurity and physical safety. The 24-hour hotline service, which was part of the original toolkit, remains in place.
“The pressure currently placed on our public school districts and those charged with leading them is immeasurable,” said Daniel A. Domenech, executive director, AASA. “While we are concerned about the academic achievement of our students, we are more concerned about the social and emotional well-being of our young learners as well as the staff in our school buildings and administrators in our central district offices. That’s why updating this invaluable resource was necessary. Ensuring the safety and physical and mental health of our school communities has never been more important.”
Resources were also contributed by the American School Counselor Association, the Association of School Business Officials International, National Association of School Psychologists, the National School Boards Association and the National School Public Relations Association.
