National Principal Supervisor Academy

Supporting principals in a partnership role.

Participant speaking in conference room

AASA partners with the University of Washington Center for Educational Leadership(CEL) to bring this standards-based academy to central office leaders who support principals' instructional leadership growth as their primary responsibility.

This academy draws from the national Professional Standards for Educational Leaders (PSEL), research by the Wallace Foundation and CEL's Principal Support Framework.

The Principal Support Framework has four action areas:

  1. Foster an inclusive leadership culture focused on creating equitable experiences and outcomes
  2. C.E.L. Principal Support Framework
  3. Co-create a shared vision of principals as leaders of equitable schools
  4. Create a system of support for principals to grow as leaders of equitable schools
  5. Develop a strategic partnership between the central office and principals

Participants will work from problems of practice, learn from impactful case studies, connect with peers in virtual professional communities and receive individual coaching. Nationwide, district leaders are working to support principals at scale, especially in times of unprecedented change. Successful supervision now demands innovative approaches, emphasizing partnership, teaching and mutual accountability.

Upon successful completion of this program, participants will receive an AASA/CEL diploma of completion and professional achievement, a valuable addition to their professional portfolio.

I am much more cognizant about protecting principals’ instructional leadership time. Also, on my site visits and in my conversations with principals, I am constantly thinking about the through line to students and how what we are doing is going to impact student learning. This Academy has brought increased awareness and reflection to my practice.

My leadership practice has changed as a result of the Principal Supervisor Academy. I now have the tools to focus specifically on the things that matter the most in affecting educational outcomes.
