AASA Issues Statement on House FY24 Appropriations Proposal
July 17, 2023
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Alexandria, Va. – July 17, 2023 – David R. Schuler, executive director of AASA, The School Superintendents Association, issued the following statement today in response to the House Appropriation Subcommittee’s budget proposal:
“AASA strongly opposes the deep, damaging cuts to education in the FY24 LHHS appropriations bill as passed out of the appropriations subcommittee last week.
“We represent the nation’s public school superintendents. Our members are familiar with and well versed in the hard work of budgeting with public dollars. They are no strangers to the pressures that come with allocating funding during tight fiscal times.
“The funding levels as passed out of committee last week, though, are reckless and irresponsible, and stand to reverse any progress our nation’s schools had made in not only recovering from COVID-related learning loss, but also hard-fought gains in student achievement and graduation rates before the pandemic. The fact is that this proposal attempts to mask deep, blunt cuts as reasoned, purposeful budget policy. Disproportionate cuts to our nation’s schools—including funds that are supposed to be in schools for the 2023-24 school year starting next month—are shortsighted, bad policy.
“We call on the broader appropriations committee to reject the deep cuts advanced out of the subcommittee, to prioritize investment in education funding, and to ensure that those programs do not face disproportionate cuts.
“AASA remains committed to a budget process that supports and strengthens our nation’s public schools.”
