Equity in Action Cohort

A call to action!

Leaders around a table in a programThe recent global pandemic has highlighted the inequities that have been engineered into the public school systems that should be serving ALL young people. AASA is calling to action school leadership teams committed to addressing the greatest social justice and civil rights issues in the United States — educational inequity.

The AASA Equity in Action Cohort will facilitate intentional and deliberate actions to address equity in rural, suburban and urban school districts. The cohort provides school leaders and their teams with a safe, collaborative and action-oriented learning space for courageous conversations about equity in schools.

Participants will engage in lively discussions with experienced lead teachers, national experts and a cadre of passionate school leaders focused on cultivating equity and excellence.

Topics of discussion throughout the cohort will include:

  • Cultivating a Culture of Equity and Excellence in School Districts
  • White Supremacy Culture and White Fragility
  • Implicit and Unconscious Bias
  • Inclusion
  • Evaluating Systems with an Equity Lens: Looking at Data and Defining Metrics
  • Strategic Planning and Systems Thinking for Equity
  • Leading your Board and Community with a Focus on Equity
  • The Intersection of SEL and Equity

The cohort will also engage in virtual site visits and develop capstone projects, action plans, resources and other publications that will be shared with AASA members and other administrators!

Who should attend?
Much of the work will be team-oriented so leaders are encouraged to attend as a district team of up to five individuals. Superintendents, cabinet-level administrators, principals and teachers will all benefit from this program!
What will I learn?

District teams will engage in a series of activities designed to evoke individual and collective abilities to self-reflect, engage in productive conflict, and change instructional practices, behaviors and district policies.

In addition, district teams will explore ways to cultivate positive and productive classroom, school and district culture. While developing the mindset needed to enhance cultural responsiveness and inclusion, district teams will also enhance their individual skills in these areas.

District teams will reflect and engage with these complex topics as a community of educators with a singular focus on cultivating equity and excellence for all students.

Ultimately, participants will:

  • Use a needs assessment to develop short- and long-term goals for their districts
  • Develop case studies and actionable plans based on real-time district issues
  • Design ways to keep themselves accountable when implementing equity plans
  • Draft actions which foster love, liberation and belonging in school districts
  • Identify ways in which school districts can create more equitable experiences and outcomes for all students
