Today, March 26, 2020, The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA)
issued a nationwide waiver that will enable districts - in a state with an approved waiver for non-congregate meal distribution - to serve meals to a parent/guardian without a child being present.
This announcement comes as a welcome relief for school system leaders, as many districts have reported that current regulations are hampering efforts to feed all students. While this is a win for students, families, and public schools, AASA will continue advocating for additional flexibilities under the federal school meals programs.
