GAO Releases 2020 Disaster Recovery Report

On October 14, 2020, the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO) released their report on K-12 disaster recovery. The study, COVID-19 Pandemic Intensifies Disaster Recovery Challenges for K-12 Schools, found that the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated and compounded the challenges associated with the 206 major disasters declared since 2017. Specifically, the GAO's findings show that for many communities, the pandemic increased mental health issues, delayed recovery projects, contributed to lost instructional time, led to staff burnout, and caused financial strain.
