Manny Scott, Leslie T. Fenwick to Serve as Summit Keynote Speakers

Alexandria, Va. – Aug. 26, 2016 – At a time when effective school leadership in our nation’s urban settings is one of the most critical issues in education, AASA, The School Superintendents Association and Howard University are pleased to host their second annual Urban Superintendents Summit today, in Alexandria, Va.

Launched in 2015, the Urban Superintendents Academy prepares individuals for certification and success in urban and increasingly diverse suburban settings. The AASA-Howard University partnership is also designed to expand the pool of underrepresented superintendent groups.

“Our Academy provides a unique opportunity for educators who wish to become leaders in urban school districts as well as their respective communities,” said Daniel A. Domenech, AASA executive director. “We are proud to collaborate with Howard University on this initiative. Providing participants with the tools necessary to excel on the job is part of AASA’s mission. Successful school leaders have successful schools that provide all children with quality education.”

The Summit’s keynote speakers will include Manny Scott, an original Freedom Writer whose story is told in part in the 2007 hit movie Freedom Writers. Leslie T. Fenwick, professor and dean emerita at Howard University’s School of Education will also serve as a keynote speaker.
