Arizona Superintendent Kristi Sandvik to be Named AASA President-Elect

Alexandria, Va. – March 12, 2019 – Kristi Sandvik, superintendent of the Buckeye Elementary School District in Buckeye, Ariz., has been elected as the 2019-20 president-elect of AASA, The School Superintendents Association.  

AASA is the premier organization for our nation’s superintendents serving thousands of education leaders throughout the U.S. Sandvik is a current member of AASA’s Executive Committee and has been a member of the organization as well as the Arizona Association of School Administrators since 2010. 

“On behalf of the thousands of school district leaders who are creating positive learning environments for the students learning and growing in our public schools, it is an honor to congratulate Kristi Sandvik as our next president-elect,” said Chris Gaines, 2018-19 president of AASA and superintendent of Mehlville School District in St. Louis, Mo. “Superintendent Sandvik exemplifies why ‘Leaders Matter,’ a campaign launched by AASA showcasing school districts where outstanding leadership has resulted in meaningful and measurable outcomes for schools, students and communities. We look forward to working with her in this new role.”

As superintendents, we have the ability to influence 51 million-plus children by focusing the talents of leaders who occupy our public schools,” said Sandvik. “As the largest voice to represent students in public schools, superintendents can encourage, inspire and cultivate the talents of leaders by fostering a love of learning in schools across the nation.”

Sandvik began her tenure as superintendent of Buckeye Schools in 2013. She previously held the position of assistant superintendent at the same school district beginning in 2010.

Honors include being named the recipient of the 2018 Arizona Parent Teacher Association Lifetime Achievement Award, the 2015 Arizona School Administrators Distinguished Administrator of the Year and the 2015 VH1 Superintendent of the Year.  

Sandvik and other newly-elected AASA governance members will begin their terms on July 1. Deborah L. Kerr, superintendent of the School District of Brown Deer in Brown Deer, Wis., and Sandvik will be sworn in as president and president-elect respectively on July 9 at a summer meeting of the AASA governing board in Washington, D.C.
