Alexandria, Va. – October 1, 2018 – AASA, The School Superintendents Association, is proud to introduce its 2018 Leaders Matter Essay Contest to promote the powerful contributions being made by the thousands of outstanding men and women charged with leading our nation’s school districts.

The contest is part of AASA’s Leaders Matter Campaign, which launched this summer to showcase school systems where the exemplary leadership of the superintendent has resulted in meaningful and measurable outcomes for schools, students and communities.

“The resiliency of AASA members continues to rise to the top, which is why we are asking communities large and small to share the good news stories generated by their school districts. Our contest is a vehicle to do just that,” said Daniel A. Domenech, executive director, AASA. “The campaign is shining a spotlight on high-performing districts and what they mean to urban, suburban and rural America. We want to document and disseminate this work to provide greater attention to the outstanding work underway in public education.”

Anyone over 21 years of age may participate by submitting a story of 350-750 words describing why “Leaders Matter” in their school districts. Entries need to include the leader’s name, school or school district, what they have done that matters and why it’s important to the school district. The leader or leaders profiled may be administrators, staff or teachers.

Finalists will receive a complimentary registration to the 2019 AASA National Conference on Education in Los Angeles, Calif., Feb 14 - 16, 2019, and a $100 DonorChoose.org Gift Card. The contest winner, as decided by online voting, will receive a $5,000 donation to the school district depicted in the winning essay, a complimentary registration to the 2019 AASA National Conference on Education, February 14 - 16, 2019, in Los Angeles, Calif., a complimentary three-night hotel stay at the JW Marriott, the conference headquarters hotel, a $700 travel stipend for the conference and a $100 DonorsChoose.org Gift Card.

The deadline to submit entries is Thursday, Nov. 1, 2018, at 11:50 p.m. For more information, as well as contest rules, please visit: aasacentral.org/leaders-matter-contest.
