Alexandria, Va. – Oct. 2, 2017 – AASA, The School Superintendents Association, launched www.aasa.org/equity.aspx, a new feature on its website, providing a compilation of resources to address equity for school system leaders to help them and the students they serve.

“More than half of our students are economically deprived. It is critically important that education thought leaders represent and speak for the vast number of children in America who should be receiving the educational services that they are entitled to,” said Daniel A. Domenech, executive director, AASA. “AASA created this portion of our website to provide resources to address an issue that is undoubtedly the greatest threat to public education today: equity. To say we’re providing all of our kids with the same services is not the solution.”
AASA’s equity section includes publications, toolkits, webinars and reports. There is also a multimedia library comprised of videos, radio segments and blogs. The landing page contains AASA’s bylaws, beliefs and position statements related to equity and the organization’s 2017 legislative agenda.

“We define equity not as being equal or treating everybody the same, but looking at the cultural history and experiences of each of our students and honoring the talents and gifts they bring to our school systems,” said Matthew Utterback, superintendent, North Clackamas (OR) School District and AASA’s 2017 National Superintendent of the Year. “As educators, we must create inclusive learning environments for each of our students. This has a significant impact on our work as educators.”

The equity section of AASA’s website will be updated on a regular basis. School system leaders, principals, teachers and other advocates of public education are encouraged to contribute stories, reports and other resources related to equity by emailing webmaster@aasa.org. They are also encouraged to join the conversation on social media by accessing the #Supts4Equity hashtag.
