Alexandria, Va. – Superintendents and other education leaders from across the country will convene at the Women in School Leadership Forum, to be held in Newport Beach, Calif., Thursday and Friday, Sept. 29 and 30, 2016. This meeting comes at a time when an increasing number of outstanding women educators are taking on leadership roles nationwide.

Earlier this year, AASA announced the expansion of its school leadership awards to recognize and support aspiring female leaders. This new category—the School Based Award—expands the depth of the AASA Women in School Leadership Awards program and provides a pathway for AASA to support more women educators in developing leadership skills and advancing their careers.

Women school system leaders attending the forum will have opportunities to discuss best practices, enhance leadership skills and strengthen professional networks in an effort to raise the level of academic achievement in their respective communities.

Forum co-hosts—the Association of California School Administrators and AASA, The School Superintendents Association—are working together to create more professional pathways for female education leaders.

Key speakers will include:

  • Ralph Porras, president, ACSA
  • Wes Smith, executive director, ACSA
  • Mary Alice Heuschel, deputy director, U.S. Programs, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation
  • Maita Zuraitis, president, Horace Mann Educators Corp.
  • Joanne Quinn, Michael Fullan Enterprises
  • Meredith O’Connor, American singer-songwriter, anti-bullying/mental health advocate
  • Azure Antoinette, poet, brand humanist, creative strategist
