WHY I WROTE THIS BOOK ...

"I believed that writing the book would help me reflect on, better understand and evaluate our experiences in addressing this persistent problem. I never believed we had the answers to solving the achievement gap,. However, educators who shared our commitment to eliminate the power of race, income and dominant language to predict student learning could benefit from our reflections."

- Robert G. Smith, associate professor at George Mason University and former superintendent, on why he co-authored GAINING THE GAP: CHANGING HEARTS, MINDS, AND PRACTICE (R+L Education, 2011).
