More than a SMART Goal

Staying Focused on Student Learning

by Anne E. Conzemius and Terry Morganti-Fisher, Solution Tree Press, Bloomington, Ind., 2011, 160 pp. with index, $24.95 softcover

More than a SMART Goal explores the successful route toward setting and implementing SMART goals — those considered specific and strategic, measureable, attainable, results-based and timebound).

Authors Anne E. Conzemius, co-founder of QLD Learning, a school improvement company in Madison, Wis., and Terry Morganti-Fisher, vice president of client services for QLD Learning, provide concrete methods for focusing on improving student learning.

Their work takes the reader through the process of assessing a school system and presents the specific questions to raise during a systemic review. The authors also offer examples of how to set priority goals via tables and charts.

Teams of teachers and administrators are essential to the improvement journey. A team must develop an intervention plan that includes instructional strategies and new programs for adoption. The joint efforts must continue during implementation and performance review.

With its many examples, stories and analogies, this book is a guide for working collaboratively toward higher student learning.
