Sidelight

sidelight_narakAlways looking for a way to stay connected to the classroom, one-time science teacher Tom Narak does so now joined by one unusual pet — Rosie, his Chilean Rose Hair tarantula. Narak, an AASA member since 1990 who works as government relations director for the School Administrators of Iowa, has owned the spider with a pinkish hue for nine years. He had an earlier tarantula (named Lurch) that he received as a birthday gift. On occassion, Narak has dressed as a mad scientist to accompany Rosie to Learnapalooza, an education fair in West Des Moines, Iowa, where he previously was superintendent. One downside of the class visits: Parents complain there’s “a lot of pressure” at home now for a pet tarantula.
