Sheldon H. Berman
After serving for 14 years as superintendent of the Hudson, Mass., system, Shelley Berman has moved into the top post of the Jefferson County Public Schools in Louisville, Ky. In 1981, he helped found Educators for Social Responsibility, a national nonprofit educational organization, and subsequently served as president of the organization from 1986-1993. His career started as a social studies teacher for six years in Bangor, Maine, and Brookline, Mass. Berman holds an Ed.D. in educational administration from the Harvard Graduate School of Education.

Gregory A. Firn
After serving almost five years as superintendent in Milford, Conn., Greg Firn has been named superintendent of the 5,300-student district in Anson County, N.C. Previously, Firn served as deputy superintendent in Wenatchee, Wash., and executive director in the Everett, Wash., Public Schools He also has worked as a high school principal, athletic director, teacher and coach of football, boys basketball and baseball in school systems in Washington and Nevada and with the Department of Defense in Germany. Firn earned his doctorate from Seattle Pacific University.

Vicki L. Phillips
Following a nearly three-year stint as superintendent in Portland, Ore., Vicki Phillips is moving over to the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation as director of education. Phillips previously served as Pennsylvania secretary of education and was superintendent in Lancaster, Pa. Phillips’ earlier jobs included executive director of the Children Achieving Challenge in Philadelphia and deputy director of the National Alliance for Restructuring Education. Phillips holds a doctorate in educational leadership and management from the University of Lincoln, England.

John A. Richman
Following an eight-year stretch as superintendent of the Plainedge Public Schools in North Massapequa, N.Y., John Richman has moved into the top berth of the Roslyn, N.Y., system. Richman earlier served as assistant superintendent in Rockville Centre, N.Y., for two years, and deputy superintendent of the Rensselaer-Columbia-Greene BOCES in Castleton on Hudson, N.Y., for two years. He spent seven years in the superintend-ency of the Berkshire Union Free Schools in Canaan, N.Y. Richman holds a doctorate from Columbia’s Teachers College.

When her work day ends as superintendent of the 3,200-student Fannin County Schools in Blue Ridge, Ga., Sandra Mercier still smiles for the customers. She’s the co-owner of Mercier Orchards, a family-run business since 1943. She views her role as the “typical consumer. I am quality control. I make sure everything tastes right, is priced right, that we offer the right goods at the market.” The orchard grows a dozen varieties of apples, as well as peaches, blueberries and cherries. With more than 200 acres of land, Mercier is mindful of her taxpaying status: “I think about that [when] setting the millage.”
