Every Student Succeeds Act Signed Into Law

Alexandria, Va. – Dec. 10, 2015 – Today, AASA Executive Director Daniel A. Domenech attended the presidential signing of the Every Student Succeeds Act into law as the most recent iteration of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act. Following up on this historic event, Domenech and AASA’s Executive Committee released the following statement:

“On behalf of our nation’s public schools and the 50 million students they serve, we commend President Obama and Congress for their strong support and leadership for the Every Student Succeeds Act. Each year, we open our school doors knowing that education remains the one true engine for opportunity, to prepare our students to experience college and career success. When we started this school year, our nation’s K-7th graders had spent the entirety of their K-12 experience, to date, under a broken NCLB. As of today, that is no longer a reality. We stand ready to implement this bill in a manner that strengthens our nation’s public schools, an opportunity we welcome and are honored to oblige.

“Today’s bipartisan law represents an acknowledgement by very passionate and committed federal policymakers who recognize the critical roles state and local education leaders must play in crafting and implementing education policies and programs. The law preserves important federal policy cornerstones such as equity, accountability, standards and assessments, but does so in a way that empowers state and local education leaders to more effectively operate the systems for which they are responsible.

“Today’s signing is the culminating event in an 8-year effort. We applaud Senators Lamar Alexander and Patty Murray and Representatives John Kline and Bobby Scott for their tireless leadership throughout the entire ESEA revision process.

“With expanded flexibility comes increased responsibility. We can now move to implementation, ensuring that the policy of ESSA translates into high-quality instruction, as well as comprehensive and rigorous curriculum and assessment. We can now move to a comprehensive approach to education—addressing the needs of the total child.”
