A few things to note as you read the data:

  • Locale codes are used to describe a school’s location, ranging from large city to rural. Of the eight locale codes currently used to classify schools, locales one through five are generally considered urban and suburban while locales six through eight are considered rural.
  • The data from the second chart was derived from Why Rural Matters 2007, as published by the Rural School and Community Trust.
  • The rankings in the second chart reflect the urgency of need. The higher the ranking, the more important or urgent rural education matters are in this state.
  • Schools counted in the '20 percent or more' category are also counted in the '10 percent or more' category.
