Whoever among the four finalists for 2012 National Superintendent of the Year receives the lofty title on Thursday afternoon in Houston, Texas, will carry a strong connection to the Mid-Atlantic region.
Three of the finalists lead school systems in Delaware, Virginia and North Carolina. The fourth contender is a superintendent in Nevada, but he spent all but the last 2½ years in teaching and administrative roles in Maryland and did most of his schooling, kindergarten through graduate school, in Virginia and Maryland.
The four finalists are:
Diane L. Frost, superintendent, Asheboro City Schools, Asheboro, N.C.
Heath Morrison, superintendent, Washoe County School District¸ Reno, Nev.
Lorraine Lange, superintendent, Roanoke County Public Schools, Roanoke, Va.
Susan Smith Bunting, superintendent, Indian River School District, Selbyville, Del.
The program, co-sponsored by ARAMARK Education, ING and AASA, is celebrating its 25th year.
See an AASA press release for more details about the four finalists, as well as the names of the 49 state superintendent of the year finalists.
A $10,000 college scholarship will be presented in the name of the National Superintendent of the Year to a student in the high school from which the superintendent graduated or the school now serving the same area.
